Malcolm Turnbull should stop wasting time on talk, stand Barnaby Joyce aside and pull the gas trigger today, by using the Australian Domestic Gas Security Mechanism (ADGSM) to declare a gas shortfall year and finally deliver relief from the high price of gas to struggling Australian families and businesses.
Malcolm Turnbull promised that he would halve gas prices in April.
TURNBULL: Oh, no, it will be cheaper than the prices that are being offered now. People are being offered prices of $20 a gigajoule. It should be around half that or less.
ABC AM – THURSDAY, 27 APRIL 2017
The Prime Minister has failed to meet the test he set for himself, putting jobs at risk.
Labor has been calling on Malcolm Turnbull to pull the gas trigger for weeks to provide some urgent relief to households and businesses.
This out-of-touch Prime Minister has refused to act and as a result Australians are paying the price with skyrocketing power bills.
He is unable to explain why he is yet to pull the trigger and he has refused to answer serious questions surrounding the ability of Barnaby Joyce to pull the trigger, given the cloud over his eligibility to be a Member of Parliament.
In order to give the community and business confidence in the trigger – the Government must detail what, if any, legal advice it has sought and received that says Barnaby Joyce is eligible to make this decision.
If it has none – the Prime Minister should stand Barnaby Joyce aside and give the job to someone whose eligibility to make this decision is not in question.
The longer Malcolm Turnbull allows Barnaby Joyce to cling to his Ministerial roles, the more uncertainty will undermine Australian industry and Australian families who are looking for urgent action to address the gas crisis.
